As you might have noticed we recently added Orla Kiely Oilcloths to our range. We are really excited to stock such iconic designs as we have been waiting for an age to get hold of Orla Kiely Oilcloths.
It's pretty difficult to not recognise an Orla Kiely design, mention her name and most people will be able to spot one of her designs in an instant. Orla Kielys' designs are stunning with their simplicity. With a 70's inspired retro look they are fun and really set up a room.
With a history as a textile designer for other companies (which included Harrods) Orla Kiely began designing and making handbags. However the twist was that they were made from Oilcloth. From this point in 1997 with her husband, Orla Kiely the business was born. From that point her designs have become iconic. Her designs have been included on wallpaper, cotton-fabrics, stationery and womens' dresses (famously worn by Kate Middleton. Many interiors experts have tried to put their finger on why Orla Kiely designs are so popular. The overwhelming consensus is they are so understated that they stand out. Whilst being a contradiction in terms from my perspective the simple designs are always the most popular. When buying new fabric we usually reject designs that are just too 'busy'. This is something that cannot be labelled at any Orla Kiely designs.
One of our most popular Orla Kiely Oilcloth designs is the Multi-Stem Tomato Oilcloth. This design was first released back in 2000 and is inspired by a Rowan Tree. The range of colours in the design still stand the test of time which gives the design almost iconic status and is the symbol of the business.
Whether you love or hate the Orla Kiely designs we just know that they will be around for many years to come. Even though we have had the design for several months now, we still get excited when we get an order through for any of the Orla Kiely prints.
As with all our Oilcloths and PVC Vinyl we offer a bias-binding hem at an additional cost. We love sewing these and think the result looks stunning. We also love seeing our Orla Kiely designs in customers' homes. Below is one such image of the Linear Stem in Cool Grey Oilcloth
Hopefully this has given you some information about Orla Kiely-you may have read about Orla Kiely ceasing trading earlier this year. That is true for the retail arm of her business but the licences for her designs still remain so you will have many years to buy these beautiful designs.
