For this Meet The Maker we meet Kelly Fenton. Kelly makes some amazing things but possibly opens up an even more interesting conversation and that is the therapeutic values of crafting, quilting and sewing. During lockdown we spoke to many people who were coping with isolation by crafting. Whether it be to make something for yourself to brighten up your home or a gift for a loved one. The positive values for a persons mental health cannot be underestimated when getting creative. Perhaps making some bunting from oilcloth, quilting for a loved one or making your own jewellery the positive benefits are immeasurable. We hope you enjoy Kelly's story and get inspired!
1. Ok, welcome to Jolee Tablecloths meet the maker. Please tell us a bit about yourself, who you are and where you are
My name is Kelly and I am based in the East Midlands. I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist working in the NHS with people who have severe and enduring mental health problems. I absolutely love my day job but it can be stressful, I love crafting as it helps me to relax. Earlier this year I combined my two passions and wrote an article for a quilting magazine about well-being for quilters.
2. Can you tell us what it is you make and what was your inspiration behind making this?I make a range of items including quilts, lavender bags and oilcloth bunting. I love making things that look pretty and add to the comfort and feel of the home. I started making my own quilts and then was inspired to make things for others when I started receiving lots of requests!
3. What do you do with your makes do you sell them, gift them or just make for yourself as a hobby? Some items I sell, some I gift and some I definitely keep for myself! I love making things and started as a hobby, after a time I realised that I didn’t have enough space so started to sell things.
4. How long have you been crafting/sewing?I have been crafting for around 6 years and have taught myself.
5. What or who was it that inspired you to start crafting/sewing?My grandmother was a keen knitter and when I was a child I would watch her knit and notice how relaxed she was. My job can be stressful at times and it’s really important to have a good work-life balance. I found that sewing and crafting helped me to relax. I also feel happy when I have completed a make and really pleased when people are happy with what I have made.
6. What are your tools of choice? Sewing Machine other magical tools!A really good pair of scissors for cutting oilcloth is a must. Oilcloth is really lovely to cut and I like to do it by hand. I also love my sewing machine!
7. Who would you recommend following on social media for inspiration?I love @quiltingdoctor on Instagram - another clinician de-stressing with crafts!
8. One tip you would give to budding crafters?YouTube is a great place to find out how to do things. The videos make it really easy to follow and you can teach yourself most things.
9. Where can we find you on social media?I am @quiltsandcuriosities on Instagram
10. One interesting fact about you that has nothing to do with craftingI am a big F1 fan, and watch all the races. Lando is my favourite driver.
